The making of the copy of this famous mosaic came about because of an agreement between “Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei” and “Consorzio Provinciale per la Formazione Professionale di Ravenna” (The government body responsible for art and archaeology in Pompei and The Professional School of Ravenna).The requirements demanded that the copy be of identical dimensions, materials and colours. The original mosaic is one of the most important and famous mosaics in the world, made of opus vermiculatum (1-4 mm per tesserae) and has been preserved for more than 150 years in the National Archeological Museum of Naples.This amazing work of art from the first century BC was discovered on 24th October 1831 during the excavation of Pompei. The mosaic measures an amazing 5.12m by 2.71m and is composed of about 4 000 000 tesserae!It depicts the Battle of Isso (the Battle of Gaugamela) in whic Alexander the Great, the Macedonian King, defied and defeated the Persian King Dario III before going on to conquer the East.This copy was made with the double reverse method at C.I.S.I.M. The International Center for the Study and Teaching of Mosaic Art in Ravenna” by a highly qualified team, among them Arianna Gallo and Luca Barberini under the supervision of the Professional School of Ravenna.After two years of intensive work “Alexander” returned to his “Casa del Fauno” in Pompei. Since 5th October 2005 every visitor to Pompei has been able to admire our copy and get a feeling of how the Casa del Fauno was originally.
