International Festival of Contemporary Mosaic Third Edition: RavennaMosaico

The International Festival of Contemporary Mosaic (third edition) begins on Saturday October 12th with a range of openings, conferences, exhibitions and festivities.
To complement the activities, Kokomosaico and Twin Dolphin Mosaics are offering a three and a half day tour of mosaics both historical and contemporary here in Ravenna and the surrounding areas beginning on October 14th. Following an aperitivo Monday night at the Kokomosaico studio and an introduction to mosaic history and materials, we’ll take day-trips Tuesday through Thursday, visiting sites throughout the region with Stephanie Jurs (Twin Dolphin Mosaics) and Arianna Gallo (Kokomosaico) as your guides. Each day at lunch we’ll eat together in a typical trattoria or share a picnic; each evening we’ll return to Ravenna in time for dinner and meet again the next morning.
This tour is both educational and a great way to get to know the area. (Most of the sites we visit are not easily reached by public transportation.) We will learn about the Roman techniques of laying a mosaic floor then see examples of floors and decorative mosaics that have survived close to 2,000 years. We’ll view the naïve, almost childlike mosaics done in the Middle Ages that are nevertheless imbued with a humble spirituality: these mosaics conjure up a time of griffins and unicorns, of two tailed mermaids, and of men setting off for the Crusades. And we’ll see contemporary mosaics, both decorative and functional, as well as works that use the medium for personal expression.
Your guides are Stephanie Jurs (Twin Dolphin Mosaics) and Arianna Gallo (Kokomosaico).

Cost: 390 euros

Includes: Welcome aperitivo (7:30 pm) and introduction to the tour, three full days of touring (approximately 9:00 am to 5:00 pm), all transportation, museum entries, services of two guides(professional mosaicists) and a final night dinner at the beach.
Not included: cost of lunches, overnight lodging, and items of a personal nature. (We are happy to suggest lodging options suited to your tastes and budget.)

Minimum of five people, maximum of ten.

The itinerary is subject to slight changes due to weather, unforeseen circumstances or merely in order to take advantage of local offerings. For more information or to reserve a space, please send an email to
Itinerary:

Monday Oct 14th: aperitivo at Kokomosaic studio, 7:30 pm. Brief history of mosaics and materials, overview of the tour, and an introduction to the works of Twin Dolphin Mosaics and Kokomosaico.
Tuesday Oct 15th: On our first full day we’ll head south of Ravenna, to visit Sarsina, birthplace of the Roman poet Plautus, and a thriving Roman community already in the 3rd century BC. The archeological museum there displays a huge polychromatic mosaic replete with the four winds and Dionysus in his chariot pulled by tigers. Other Roman-era mosaics are exhibited in the stairwell and on the upper floors. After lunch in a typical trattoria, we’ll visit the Villa Romana in Russi, with its well-preserved lay-out of a Roman country house and working farm. The black and white marble mosaic floors are an education in themselves.

Wednesday Oct 15th: Ravenna is famous for her UNESCO World Heritage monuments and mosaics, but there are many less well-known mosaics throughout the city. On our morning walking tour we’ll visit many of these treasures, dating from the Middle Ages to the present, then pick up our picnic fixings at the local open-air market. In the afternoon we may visit Forli or Faenza, cities on the ancient Via Emilia, to delve more into the region’s past, or perhaps head north to Pomposa, site of a Benedictine monastery in the Middle Ages, once the most important spiritual and cultural center of the region. The patchwork church floor includes fantastical animals executed in mosaic.

Thursday Oct 16th: Our last day takes us to Rimini, once an important Roman town and still a chic seaside resort. We’ll visit not only the excavations from a Roman surgeon’s house with its mosaics still in place, but also other sites attesting to ancient Arminium’s importance to the area. Our walk through town will take us by a contemporary mosaic fountain and weather permitting, for a stroll on the beach. Returning to Ravenna we’ll enjoy a last night dinner together out at the beach, at one of Ravenna’s best-known fish restaurants.
Twin Dolphin Mosaics: Stephanie Jurs and Robert Stout have been creating tile mosaics since 1990. Their primary material is solid-body porcelain tile. Much of their work has been commissioned by public art entities in New Mexico, Oregon, and Florida and can be found at universities, in museums, commercial buildings and private residences. Twice winners of the International Spectrum Award, they continue to create mosaics for both public and private clients in their studio in Ravenna. www.twindolphinmosaics.com
Kokomosaico : Arianna Gallo and Luca Barberini both graduated from the Mosaic Institute Severini in Ravenna in the early 90s. Arianna completed the three year course at the Mosaic Restoration School. Both of them have worked in or with most of the major studios and mosaicists in Ravenna, and in 2005 they inaugurated their own studio, Kokomosaico. Their professional work includes restoring and reproducing Roman and Byzantine mosaics, teaching mosaic classes, and creating contemporary mosaics on commission. www.kokomosaico.com

Instructor: Robert Stout of Twin Dolphin Mosaics

Kokomosaico, in collaboration with Robert Stout of Twin Dolphin Mosaics, is offering a week long tile mosaic course.
Ceramic tile is a versatile mosaic material, perfectly suited to creating quality artwork. Robert and his wife, Stephanie Jurs, have been creating tile mosaics for over twenty years; their work ranges from small wall pieces to large mosaic pavements, many of which are public art commissions for US universities and museums.
The techniques used and the resulting ‘feel’ of tile mosaics are quite different from those of mosaics made with glass or marble.
During this five day course students will create a 12-16” square mosaic using solid-body porcelain tiles. This material is an unglazed commercial ceramic tile, high fired, suitable for both interior and exterior applications. A solid color throughout, it breaks easily with either a hammer or nippers.
A course appropriate for beginners as well as advanced mosaicists, students will participate in each phase of production as they create their own piece, and learn techniques suitable for large or small scale works.

The course is 40 hours, Monday to Friday; the cost of 660€ covers taxes, insurance, all instruction and materials, use of tools, and the mosaic created during the course.

In 2006 and 2009 Twin Dolphin Mosaics received Spectrum Awards, annual international awards honouring outstanding and imaginative uses of tile.
Some photos of their work can be seen on a Kokomosaico flickr page:
