Come learn to make tile mosaics with Robert Stout and Stephanie Jurs of Twin Dolphin Mosaics.
Ceramic tile is a versatile mosaic material, perfectly suited to creating quality artwork. Robert and Stephanie have been creating broken tile mosaics for over twenty years; their work ranges from small wall pieces to large mosaic pavements, many of which are public art commissions for US universities and museums.
Twice winners of Spectrum awards (First Prize Commercial and Award of Merit), Twin Dolphin Mosaics continues to produce tile mosaic artwork for public and private clients in the US and Europe. Their current project is five pavement mosaics for an Art Center near Seattle, Washington.
The techniques and the ‘feel’ of tile mosaics are both similar and quite different from those of mosaics made with glass or marble. During this five day course you will create a 12-16” square mosaic using solid-body porcelain tiles. This material is an unglazed commercial ceramic tile, high fired, suitable for both interior and exterior applications. A solid color throughout, it breaks easily with either a hammer or nippers.
A course appropriate for beginners as well as advanced mosaicists, you’ll learn techniques suitable for large or small scale works. We’ll cover issues related to the design, production, materials, techniques and installation of tile mosaic artwork.

The course is 40 hours, Monday to Friday; the cost is 660€ which covers taxes, insurance, all instruction and materials, use of tools, certificate attesting to successful completion of the course, and the mosaic you create during the course.

Dates:
19-23 July (COMPLETE)

Near Ravenna we can see: a huge Roman-era floor mosaic replete with hunting scenes, Dionysus and pals; a Roman villa dating to the 1st century AD with many of its black/white geometric floors intact; and the remains of an 11th century Benedictine monastery whose church floor writhes with mosaic animals and geometric patterns.

Venice is where we admire the mosaics of St Mark’s, the 11th century mosaics on the island of Torcello (with a very sobering depiction of Judgment Day), and the splendour of the Orsoni glass and gold factory.

Spilimbergo is home to a respected mosaic school and a lively community of artists whose mosaic philosophy differs sharply from that of Ravenna’s.

Aquileia, northern Italy’s most important archeological site. We’ll visit a Basilica literally carpeted with early Christian mosaics and a museum whose collection has been called ‘a graduate course in mosaics’.

If we choose to go south, there are numerous hidden mosaic treasures—this is the heartland of the Roman Empire after all. For a change of pace, we might visit Niki St Phalle’s Tarot Garden, a sculpture garden boasting huge sculptures based on the tarot cards, entirely covered in mosaic.

In addition to exploring the mosaic sites, we know these areas well: the cafés, the local studios and the back streets. On all of these trips you are accompanied by either Stephanie Jurs, an American mosaicist (Twin Dolphin Mosaics) and experienced travel guide, who has lived in Ravenna for the past eleven years, and/or staff from Kokomosaico. Visiting these sites with working mosaicists who live here will increase your appreciation and understanding of what the sites have to offer. The excursions can stand alone or form part of your mosaic course at Kokomosaico.

Each excursion is planned individually according to your preferences. Price depends on the length of the excursion and the number of people participating. Please write Stephanie at twindolphinmosaics@yahoo.com for more information, prices, and to make a reservation.

Come join us in Italy for two weeks of full immersion in mosaics!

This stimulating mix of hands-on followed by a week of touring the best mosaic sites and studios in Northern Italy will leave you with a deeper understanding and appreciation of both traditional mosaics and contemporary mosaic expression.
Your hosts, teachers and guides are Stephanie Jurs of Twin Dolphin Mosaics, and Arianna Gallo and Luca Barberini of Kokomosaico.

Arianna and Luca have been teaching traditional mosaics for years and have worked in or with most of the Ravenna studios; Stephanie has been making broken tile mosaics, as one-half of Twin Dolphin Mosaics, for almost twenty years and guiding trips in Italy for seven. Working and travelling with us you’ll get a perspective on Italy and mosaics (both ancient and contemporary) that’s pretty unique.
We’ll visit some private studios and see some mosaic sites that we know about just because we live here, that aren’t in any guide books.

We’ll all meet up Sunday evening in Ravenna for a welcome aperitivo and a delicious dinner of local specialities.
The first five days are spent at Kokomosaico, learning the traditional methods used for both Roman and Byzantine mosaics. After an introduction to the history of mosaics and a visit to Ravenna’s world-famous monuments, you’ll make two mosaics of your own under the expert tutelage of Arianna and Luca.
You’ll learn to cut marble and glass into tiny tessere, and using the double reverse method you’ll make a copy of a fragment of an ancient mosaic. Next you’ll design your own mosaic pattern and execute it using the direct method. Both pieces will be finished by the end of the week and you can take with, or ship them home. (For advanced mosaicists, there are numerous other topics and techniques to explore.)

Then with Stephanie, an American mosaicist who has been living in Ravenna for over ten years, you’ll begin a week-long tour of some of the finest mosaic sites northern Italy has to offer. In Ravenna itself and nearby we find mosaics ranging from the first century AD, through naive and soulful medieval mosaics, right up to present-day expression.
On Sunday we take off for Pomposa, with the remains of the 11th century Benedictine monastery whose church floor writhes with mosaic animals and geometric patterns.
During the week we visit Spilimbergo, home to a lively community of mosaicists whose mosaic philosophy differs sharply from that of Ravenna’s; Aquileia, northern Italy’s most important archeological site with a Basilica literally carpeted with early Christian mosaics; and Venice, where we’ll span the centuries admiring the mosaics of St Mark’s, the 11th century mosaics on the island of Torcello, and the splendour of the Orsoni glass and gold factory.

Specifics: This is a custom course/tour. With a maximum of seven participants, the course/tour begins in Ravenna and ends in Venice and runs from Sunday to the Saturday two weeks later, 14 days/13 nights.
The cost includes a welcome aperitivo and dinner Sunday night, the five day (40 hours) mosaic workshop and all materials, accommodation in Ravenna (breakfast included) through Saturday night, accommodation in Spilimbergo and Venice, breakfasts, transfers/transport/car, museum entries and guided visits, studio visits, and a farewell dinner in Venice.
Price assumes hotel room double occupancy. Supplement of $250 for single rooms (unfortunately, single rooms are not just ½ price of a double. You can ask to share with another student, to make a double.)
To keep costs down most dinners are ‘free’ dinners. In Ravenna we orient you to nearby excellent restaurants; during the tour we eat together but just order off the menu. This way one can eat as much or as little as one wants, or even skip a meal; each night will take us to a different restaurant with a different atmosphere. Lunch we do on our own, often buying picnic supplies, or maybe stopping at a small local trattoria or bar/café.
Price does not cover: ‘free’ dinners, lunches, and transport to and from our initial/ending meeting spots, shipping your mosaics home (if you do not take them with you), personal expenditures, etc.

The making of the copy of this famous mosaic came about because of an agreement between “Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei” and “Consorzio Provinciale per la Formazione Professionale di Ravenna” (The government body responsible for art and archaeology in Pompei and The Professional School of Ravenna). The requirements demanded that the copy be of identical dimensions, materials and colours. The original mosaic is one of the most important and famous mosaics in the world, made of opus vermiculatum (1-4 mm per tesserae) and has been preserved for more than 150 years in the National Archeological Museum of Naples. This amazing work of art from the first century BC was discovered on 24th October 1831 during the excavation of Pompei. The mosaic measures an amazing 5.12m by 2.71m and is composed of about 4 000 000 tesserae! It depicts the Battle of Isso (the Battle of Gaugamela) in whic Alexander the Great, the Macedonian King, defied and defeated the Persian King Dario III before going on to conquer the East. This copy was made with the double reverse method at C.I.S.I.M. The International Center for the Study and Teaching of Mosaic Art in Ravenna” by a highly qualified team, among them Arianna Gallo and Luca Barberini under the supervision of the Professional School of Ravenna. After two years of intensive work “Alexander” returned to his “Casa del Fauno” in Pompei. Since 5th October 2005 every visitor to Pompei has been able to admire our copy and get a feeling of how the Casa del Fauno was originally.
